About this group

Shiba Inu, Shiba Inu Pet Insurance

The Shiba Inu is one of the few ancient dog breeds still in existence today. Originating from Japan, the breed was originally used for hunting small animals and birds. It bears similarities to its cousin, the Akita, but is smaller in size.

The breed nearly became extinct in the early 1900s, as English hunting dogs were brought in to Japan and were being cross bred with the Shiba Inu dogs. By 1930 a movement to preserve the breed was in force and the breed standards were unified in 1934.

Shibas are thought to suffer from less hereditary diseases than most breeds, but, due to early in-breeding, they can suffer from loss of teeth, eye problems, luxating patella, hip dysplasia and allergies. All breeds, but particularly Shibas, should be taken for regular eye and joint check-ups.

Shibas’ thick coat protects them from both heat and cold weather, and should not be shaved or cut, but does need to be brushed daily during season changes, when they shed heavily. They are very intelligent and so need to be walked at least once daily in an outdoor environment where they can be stimulated mentally. However, because of their natural hunting instinct, they should not be let off the lead, as they are likely to run off.

They are energetic, highly trainable, entertaining and excitable, but are not cuddly by nature and can be aloof. That said, if socialised correctly, they get on very well with children and other dogs (possibly even cats), and are fiercely loyal to their human family.

For the right owner, a Shiba Inu would be a delightful addition to the household and a true companion for life. The Japanese Shiba Inu Rescue UK has plenty of information on adopting a Shiba Inu.
