About this group
Courageous, super-fast and immune to insect bites, these majestic dogs are the super breed of the K9 world.
All you have to do is look into the breed’s history to immediately discover how special they are. The Rhodesian Ridgeback, also known as the African Lion Dog, was bred in Zimbabwe to HUNT LIONS. Yes, you read that correctly – these dogs were bread to take on the king of the jungle.
These super dogs are very sturdy – they can withstand extreme temperatures and run long distances, which, unsurprisingly, makes them popular with athletes. They need a lot of exercise and so are only suitable to owners whose surroundings and fitness levels would allow the dog to run around and spend that boundless energy. If not exercised daily, both physically and mentally, Ridgebacks can become destructive.
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is generally a healthy breed, with few genetic disorders. However, they can be prone to hip dysplasia, mast cell tumours, dermoid sinus and cysts. They don’t shed a lot and so are easy to groom, but, being a very independent breed, need training from a young age. If they don’t recognise their owner as the pack leader, they can grow up to be wilful, and even aggressive towards other dogs. While they can be too energetic for young children, their intelligence and loyal nature makes them great company for older children.
Join the group to use the collective buying power you share with other Ridgeback owners to get a great deal on pet insurance for your super dog.
