I have become housebound since end of July this year. I have 2 dogs and initially when I was hospitalised for 3 weeks in August, they were kennelled. On my return home both the dogs were taken in by family members and are still with them. I hope to be back on my feet asap and then I will be able to look after them when they come home. Does the More Than insurance cover the cost for the 3 weeks they spent in kennels?

  • avatar for KingmaKingma (Bought By Many staff) 4 weeks ago

Hi Patrisha, thanks for reaching out. I'm very sorry to hear that you were hospitalised, and sincerely hope you're making a speedy recovery. In this instance, it will be better to direct contact More Than Pet Insurance and ask them the same question. You can contact More Than by emailing pet@morethan.com or calling their customer service department on 0330 102 2915. All the best, Bought By Many

We took in our 2nd little cocker recently, a Breeding Bitch from MTAR. Poor little girl had lost an eye and had a nasty cataract treated at the Row Eye Clinic in Bristol. All is fine and the rest of her is amazingly healthy. However I seem unable to find any question asking of her background on any companies application form. I have for many years insured my dogs and have always been disappointed at the way they can wriggle out of paying certain percentages for claims. I would like to make sure that they know, and have quoted for, a dog with a hazy past health history. Any advice please

I need cover for my dog who is not only an adult but has been previously treated for ear infections. AFI would not pay on vet bills as they had already done so within 12 months . I need cover that will treat it if it reccurrs, lifetime cover should it come back . I also have a 13 year old cat so a multi pet policy would be advantageous Any views on who can offer the best deal

MoreThan pet insurance - 1st year discount only? And renewal premiums...

View all 4 answers
  • avatar for SteveSteve 1 year, 1 month ago

I assume the special MoreThan discount is only applied in the first year? (it doesn't make this clear on your offer page). My experience of pet insurers is that they will suck you in with a discount offer then claw it back (and more) in subsequent years. I insured my two young cats with MoreThan a couple of years ago and the policy cost was about £240 p.a. (including the 20% introductory discount that was a special offer at that time). This should have translated to a full premium of about £300, but they wanted £350 at the first renewal and £400 at the 2nd renewal (due about now). I've made no claims at all, so I've just checked their website with my cats' details and found that they're quoting less than my first year's premium for a new policy i.e. £230, or about £255 before discount! I did negotiate a reduction at my first year's renewal, but I'm not happy about being quoted £145 more than (pun intended...) the current new business price (before any discount is applied) at my 2nd renewal. Now I know why they're called MoreThan... Incidentally, when I phoned to query my first year's renewal premium, I was given some hogwash about vet fees and other costs constantly increasing (and various other excuses), but this isn't borne out by the current new business premium being lower than the one I was quoted 2 years ago (not forgetting the discount that was given to me with little resistance at all at the first renewal). Yes, I know some vet costs are going up, but this seems to be used as a smokescreen to conceal some serious jiggery-pokery going on behind the scenes with policy rating factors and the resulting premiums. Most, if not all, the pet insurers seem to be indulging in this unethical (in my view), but not illegal, practice and it really gives the industry a bad name. It's nothing new, of course - I remember having monthly pet policies in the 1980s (with E&L and Pet Plan, I think) and they increased premiums several times a year (which they could do, as the policies were effectively renewed each month) - appalling behaviour! Pet insurance is notoriously hard to price correctly, but most of the big players have been in the business for many years and should have refined the process by now - sadly, though, it just seems to be no more scientific than "think of a number and see if anyone buys it; if they do then add at least 25% next time around...". The dilemma for me, and other pet owners, is finding an insurer that can be trusted to charge fair prices once a pet reaches the maximum age at which they will be accepted for new insurance policies. My cats are still young and I can therefore swap to another insurer if I'm being ripped off (assuming they don't need treatment), so I'm tempted to do this rather than go cap in hand to MoreThan and ask for a 2nd year discount - they should be rewarding loyal customers instead of shafting them, and that's made them untrustworthy in my book. Anyone else had similar experiences with unreasonably inflated renewal premiums? It's well worth checking prices for new policies from your current insurers, but do remember to remove the first year discount (if there is one) before making comparisons. Any claims made will usually, but not always, cause renewal premiums to be loaded, so it's easier to make comparisons if no claims have been made - still worth doing, though.

  • avatar for SteveSteve 1 year, 1 month ago

Well, I did phone MoreThan after all, but all they could offer was about £50 off the renewal premium, so I won't be renewing with them. Renewal premiums appear to be more than (!) 50% higher than the equivalent new business policy, so buyer beware! N.B. when making comparisons, I excluded the new business discounts, so I could be sure I was comparing like with like; pet details, needless to say, were identical, so MoreThan are outrageously inflating renewal premiums. But, looking at it another way, they're selling new policies at a 35% discount as a sort of "loss leader" and will recover this in subsequent years (and more), so be prepared to get a big shock at your first renewal...

1st years premium for 2 Rottweilers, I male, 1 female, both neutered, no pre-existing, with MoreThan via Bought by Many was £73.00 per month. 1 claim for a cut foot, so non-recurring. Renewal notice this morning = £138.11 per month. Phoned MoreThan, lot of waffle, insurance premium tax.... Went onto Bought By Many website, logged in, clicked get a quote = quote = £87.82 per month. Are we supposed to get our renewals each year via Bought by Many?

You can only put up to 3 animals on the same policy online, so you may want to do a policy for the dogs, and a policy for the cats. I have my 10 year old dog insured with Tesco at the moment and my question is this: How do I use my insurance to get treatment for my dog when I cannot afford the excess ? I just manage to pay the premium each month as it is do you have any suggestions where I can get treatment for my dog and be able to pay the excess in instalments. I live in the Pontefract area. Hello Pranjal, Thank you for your message. I'm afraid this isn't something we can really help with, as we only deal with pet insurance, rather than the cost of keeping a dog. That said, we do have a couple of articles on the the subject. They aren't breed specific, but may provide some guidance: https://boughtbymany.com/news/article/costs-vs-savings-of-owning-a-dog/ https://boughtbymany.com/news/article/dogs-are-priceless/ I would suggest contacting Battersea Dogs and Cats Home (http://www.battersea.org.uk/), Dogs Trust (https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/) or the Kennel Club (http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/) for more detailed information. Discount on Pet Insurance

  • avatar for SandraSandra 1 year, 10 months ago

I went through the BbM website as a member to Morethan and got a quote for my 2 pets. The quote says I have a 19% discount. Morethan say they offer a standard 15% discount for an online purchase of pet insurance. So where is the 28% discount that BbM offer with Morethan if y9u insure more than one pet? Has anyone else had this issue?

  • avatar for KevinKevin 1 year, 8 months ago

Had same question (and 2 dogs), so went onto Morethan website, without going through BbM.Created another quote request, with almost identical data. BbM quote (with header about 19% discount) = £85.72pm. Non BbM quote (again with 19% header discount) = £105.06. So while I can't get the (additional) discount to 28%, there is a £20pm difference on the Premier policy with BbM.

  • avatar for HeidiHeidi (Bought By Many staff) 1 year, 8 months ago

Hi Kevin Thanks for getting in touch. More Than offer a discount of 19% online, directly through them. Our discount is a total of 28% compared with buying direct from More Than over the phone.
