About this group
Chinese Crested dogs don’t only have a unique, striking look, they are also alert, charming, friendly and playful.
Despite their name, they actually originate from Africa and were called the African Hairless Terrier. Chinese ships travelling through Africa brought the dogs on board to catch vermin and changed their name. The breed was finally established in the USA in the 20th century.
The Chinese Crested is the most popular of the hairless dog breeds. There are two main types of Chinese Crested Dogs: Hairless (the dog is hairless except for its feet, head and tail) and Powderpuff (the dog has a long soft coat all over). Both varieties can be born in the same litter.
The hairless breed needs special care to prevent injury or damage to the exposed skin. While they do love children, play should be supervised, as they are delicate dogs. They must wear a jumper when out in the cold, and sunscreen when out in the sun, as they do get sunburn. They are also prone to dental problems, including tooth loss (Powderpuff dogs have healthier teeth). Both breeds can be prone to luxating patella, eye problems, CMSD and wool and Lanolin allergies.
Both breeds require a lot of grooming – the Hairless needs regular baths, with oils or creams, and the Powderpuff needs daily brushing.
