About this group
Alaskan Malamutes are big dogs who look like wolves, so should be scary. In reality, however, there is nothing at all threatening about them; they are loyal, affectionate and protective of their owners, especially children.
This is not a surprising fact considering that the Mahlemut (a group of Alaskan Inupiat), who first bred these beautiful animals, used them, amongst other things, to ‘babysit’ their young when the grown-ups went on hunting trips. They were also used as hunting and sled dogs. These days, they are highly popular family pets, with famous owners including funny man actor Robin Williams, film director George Lucas and actress Melissa Gilbert.
Like their closest relative, the Siberian Husky, Mals still portray many of the characteristics of their wolf ancestors and their bark is more of a howl, which sometimes sounds like they are speaking. The Alaskan Malamute is one of the ancient dog breeds, and is genetically different to other dog breeds.
Health issues for Mals include hip and elbow dysplasia, eye problems (especially cataracts), Epilepsy, congenital heart problems and defects, kidney problems and skin disorders.
