The insurance industry has long been wary of providing holiday insurance for cancer patients. For survivors – i.e. those with an all clear, where the condition is a thing of the past – some solutions exist. However for patients or sufferers – i.e. those who have cancer now, those who are undergoing treatment now or those awaiting a diagnosis - cover has been nearly impossible to get. For members of Bought by Many, that has now changed. You can now join our Cancer Patients group to get a quote for those situations.
What happens when getting travel insurance with cancer today
Trying to get travel insurance for cancer sufferers is difficult because almost every insurer will refuse cover if someone is currently on a waiting list, undergoing treatment, or awaiting results or a diagnosis. Due to the necessary treatment and monitoring, anyone who currently has cancer will almost certainly be in at least one of those situations, and so be unable to get the cover they need. This can lead to hours spent getting the same refusal time and again. For many, this means they cannot risk the travel and so terribly they miss out on the trip of a lifetime.
Where can I get travel insurance as a cancer sufferer?
We believe there is now a solution to this problem. Following negotiations with insurance companies, our Travel Insurance for Cancer sufferers group has access to an policy that will accept them. The insurer provides emergency medical expenses cover to travellers in any medical situation - including those undergoing cancer treatment, or awaiting tests and diagnoses* - between the ages of 50-80.
There are no in-depth questionnaires resulting in a robotic ‘no’, instead the only request might be to get a doctor’s note that confirms fitness to travel. Joining the group will not only give you access to this insurance and a 10% discount on your premium, it will add your voice to the strength of the group, meaning in the future we can hopefully improve things even further.
