Background to Tesco home insurance

Supermarket chain Tesco might be more famous for its fruit and veg than finances, but Tesco offers a number of financial products. It has expanded its range of services over the past few decades, including branching out into general insurance under its Tesco Bank organisation.

Its home insurance products are underwritten by a range of insurers, including Tesco, AXA, Towergate, Royal & Sun Alliance and Legal and General.

Its home emergency cover is underwritten by Interpartner Assistance SA, while its family legal protection is underwritten by Ageas Insurance Limited.

Overview of the cover provided by Tesco home insurance policies

Tesco customers can choose whether to take out a combined buildings and contents policy, or to select either of the products individually.

There are no set limits for either its buildings or contents total cover, this will depend on the level of protection you personally require – bearing in mind that the higher the value, the more expensive your premium is likely to be.

Its contents insurance offers a number of key features as standard, including accidental damage for home entertainment equipment, up to £1,500 cover on garden contents (including lawnmowers and barbeques), and up to £1,000 towards covering the cost of food destroyed in the event of a freezer failure.

Meanwhile its buildings insurance includes cover for permanent fixtures such as built-in wardrobes and kitchens, up to £5,000 towards repairing the damage from burst and blocked sewer pipes, and replacement locks if keys are lost or stolen. All home repairs carried out by an approved tradesman are also guaranteed for one year.

You can also choose to add further policy benefits, such as extended accidental damage cover, away from the home (including protection for bicycles), family legal expense insurance, and 24-hour cover for home emergency situations.

How much does home insurance from Tesco cost?

The exact price of your premium will depend on a number of factors, so it’s always best to get a quote from Tesco directly, however here are a few of the influences that could impact the cost of taking out home insurance:

  • The policy you select (buildings only, contents only, combined)
  • The value of your home contents
  • The age and location of your house
  • Your policy excess
  • Any previous recent claims
  • Whether you select any added extras

It’s important to make sure that you take out adequate cover for your home and contents, which doesn’t always make the cheapest price the best option.

For example, don’t raise your excess to a level you’d struggle to pay in the event of a claim, just to make the overall price cheaper. Equally, don’t cut corners on your total cover, as you may find yourself needing to make a claim but uninsured for the issue.

To make its policy more affordable, Tesco does offer a discount to Clubcard holders, on all products except family legal expense assistance and home emergency cover.
