Overview of the car insurance offered by Swinton
Swinton is a large insurance company, offering motor, business, motorbike, taxi, caravan and home insurance.
It offers three different levels of car insurance cover: Essential, Classic, and Premier.
All three cover levels provide cover if your car is damaged, fire and theft cover, third party cover for driving other cars, emergency medical costs, audio, satnav and car equipment cover if any of this is stolen, and a courtesy car while your car is being fixed. Winsdcreen cover is standard on Classic and Premier, but will only cover you up to £150 on its Essential policy.
The Classic model also includes motoring legal expenses cover up to £100,000, an excess refund and the protection of your no claims discount if you are hit by an uninsured driver, cover for driving abroad up to 90 days, and lock, child seat and personal belongings cover.
Swinton's Premier policy covers all of the above, with the addition of an excess refund of up to £500 if you are at fault in a claim, a hire car for up to 14 days if your car is written off or stolen and not recovered, and even misfuelling cover of up to £2,500.
Swinton also offers a number of optional extras. These include the option to protect your no claims discount, and breakdown cover. These extras can be added to any of the three policy cover levels.
Swinton also says it will be able to insure you on a third party, fire and theft policy if you call the company and request more information.
See if these cover levels put Swinton in our list of the best car insurance companies.
Are there any exclusions with Swinton car insurance?
There are, as with all car insurance products, a few exclusions on Swinton's car insurance policies. For instance, if you are driving abroad, you will be covered up to 90 days, but you can only drive abroad for up to 30 days on any one trip.
And the courtesy cars that Swinton says are available as standard on all its cover levels are subject to availability, meaning you may not be able to get one under some circumstances.
You'll also only be able to claim for misfuelling once per year. So if you put diesel in your petrol twice in a twelve month insurance period, you'll have to fork out the cost of repairs the second time yourself.
Its optional no claims protection will protect you from two claims in a five year period without affecting your no claims bonus, but only if your bonus is four or more years.
There may be other exclusions to Swinton's car insurance policy. It's important to read your policy documents thoroughly so you know exactly what you're covered for. You can find these documents in the My Account section on Swinton's website.
How much does Swinton car insurance cost?
Swinton says 10% of its customers paid £175 or less per year for comprehensive cover. This is based on figures taken from 1 December 2016, to 22 May 2017, and includes no optional extras.
Realistically though, it is difficult to figure out exactly how much car insurance from Swinton will cost. This is because car insurance premiums are dependent on a range of factors, including the car you drive, how long you have been driving for, where your car is kept overnight, and even where you live.

How to make a claim on Swinton car insurance
To make a claim on Swinton car insurance, you'll need to call its claims line on 0800 040 7019. This line is open 24 hours a day for motor accidents, fire or theft, windscreen damage and malicious damage.
When you call, Swinton says you will need to have to hand:
- Your policy documents
- A crime reference number, if you have one
- The registration of any other vehicles involved in the incident
- The name, address, and phone number of the other party
- Details of any witnesses
It also recommends you to have photographs of the accident and damage to the vehicles involved. The company reminds you not to admit fault until you've spoken to your insurer.
After that, Swinton will make the decision as to whether you will be covered for the incident or not.
