What types of Pet Insurance does Scratch and Patch offer?

Scratch and Patch offers cover for dogs and cats. The company’s Pet Insurance policies are underwritten by Hiscox and have five levels of cover:

  1. Premier Plus

    This is a lifetime policy and it's Scratch and Patch's most comprehensive level of cover.

    It includes up to £8,000 per year for vet fees (this includes £1,000 for alternative medicine; £2,000 for cruciate ligament; £2,000 for MRI or CT scan; £8,000 for dental treatment caused by accident or injury; £100 for diet food and £500 for behavioural treatment).

    It also has up to £1,500 cover for death from accident or illness; £150 for euthanasia; £2m for third-party liability (dogs only); £1,500 for loss and recovery; £750 for accidental damage; up to £2,500 for holiday cancellation and up to £1,000 for emergency boarding or pet minding for your pet if you are hospitalised for medical treatment.

  2. Premier

    This is a lifetime policy, which includes up to £4,000 per year for vet fees (this includes £750 for alternative medicine; £1,500 for cruciate ligament; £1,500 for MRI or CT scan; £4,000 for dental treatment caused by accident or injury; £100 for diet food and £250 for behavioural treatment).

    It has up to £1,500 cover for death from accident or illness; £100 for euthanasia; £1.5m for third-party liability (dogs only); £1,500 for loss and recovery; £500 for accidental damage; up to £1,500 for holiday cancellation and up to £1,000 for emergency boarding or pet minding for your pet if you are hospitalised for medical treatment.

  3. Gold

    This is a per-condition policy, which includes up to £4,000 for vet fees per injury/illness (this includes £400 for alternative medicine; £1,000 for cruciate ligament; £1,000 for MRI or CT scan; £4,000 for dental treatment caused by accident or injury and £100 for diet food).

    It also features up to £1,000 cover for death from accident or illness; £1.5m for third-party liability (dogs only); £1,000 for loss and recovery; up to £1,000 for holiday cancellation and up to £1,000 for emergency boarding or pet minding for your pet if you are hospitalised for medical treatment.

  4. Silver

    This is a 12-month time-limited policy, which includes up to £3,000 for vet fees per injury/illness (this includes £300 for alternative medicine; £500 for cruciate ligament; £500 for MRI or CT scan; £3,000 for dental treatment caused by accident or injury and £100 for diet food).

    It includes up to £500 cover for death from accident or illness; £1m for third-party liability (dogs only); £750 for loss and recovery; up to £750 for holiday cancellation and up to £750 for emergency boarding or pet minding for your pet if you are hospitalised for medical treatment.

  5. Bronze

    This is an accident-only time-limited policy, which includes up to £2,250 for vet fees per accident (this includes £250 for alternative medicine; £500 for cruciate ligament and £250 for dental treatment caused by accident or injury)

    It features up to £250 cover for death for accidents; £1m for third-party liability (dogs only); £250 for loss and recovery and up to £250 for emergency boarding or pet minding for your pet if you are hospitalised for medical treatment.

    The following excess fees apply to all policies:

    • Dogs under 8 - £75
    • Dogs over 8 - £200
    • Cats under 10 - £75
    • Cats over 10 - £200
    • Third-party liability - £250

    Is behaviour training covered by Scratch and Patch Insurance?

    Scratch and Patch offers cover for behavioural treatment as part of its Premier (£250) and Premier Plus (£500) policies.

    There is no cover for behavioural issues in the Bronze, Silver and Gold policies.

    How much does Scratch and Patch Pet Insurance cost?

    For this review, we got example quotes from Scratch and Patch for a five-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier in Milton Keynes in May 2017.

    • Premier, with up to £4,000 vet bills cover: £30.68 monthly, £368.11 annually
    • Gold Maximum Benefit, with up to £4,000 vet bills cover: £22.40 monthly, £268.84 annually
    • Silver Time Limited, with up to £3,000 vet bills cover: £13.70 monthly, £164.37 annually
    • Bronze Accident Only, with up to £2,250 vet bills cover: £6.75 monthly, £81.04 annually

    However, do bear in mind that the cost of pet insurance is affected by many different factors, such as the type and breed of pet, the pet’s age and medical conditions, and the owner’s postcode.
