Background to Policy Expert Home Insurance

Policy Expert Insurance is unique in that it does the job of both a direct insurer and a price comparison site, allowing customers to seek out good deals and personalise their quotes, and also managing the purchasing, renewal, and claims side of insurance.

Policy Expert is the trading name of QMetric Group Limited (QGL), an insurance company launched in 2010 which combines leading edge technology and innovative underwriting to offer competitively-priced products ranging from home insurance to travel insurance.

Overview of cover provided by Policy Expert Home Insurance

Policy Expert offers home insurance underwritten by a range of providers, including AXA, Ageas, Aviva, Midas and UK General Insurance.

It also offers home insurance policies under its own brand – Policy Expert Home Plus, Policy Expert Home Select and Policy Expert Home Protect – plus two exclusive policies, Policy Expert Home Essentials and Policy Expert Home Premier, which offer budget insurance and comprehensive tailor-made insurance respectively.

Cover can be obtained for buildings or contents, or as both combined. Buildings insurance benefits include: basic accidental damage cover for damage to cables, bathroom suites and glass; garages, sheds and outbuildings covered as standard, alternative accommodation if your home becomes uninhabitable, liability insurance and a "trace and access" policy, which means damage isn’t just fixed, but the cause of the problem is identified and fixed, too.

Contents insurance benefits include: cover up to £100,000, with no need to specify items worth less than £2,000 and individual items covered up to £15,000; basic accidental damage to mirrors, hobs and glass (with some policies including damage to TVs, desktop PCs and games consoles); and alternative accommodation if your home becomes uninhabitable, even if you don’t have buildings insurance.

Policy Expert Home Insurance also offers a range of optional extras, including full accidental damage cover, home emergency cover, legal expenses, bicycle cover and "away from the home" cover for personal possessions.

How much does Policy Expert home insurance cost?

The cost of home insurance from Policy Expert depends on a variety of factors, including your address, the level of cover you require and how much you want to insure. According to the company, however, 96% of customers save money when they switch their home insurance to Policy Expert, and some of the company’s insurers will offer two-year fixed premiums, helping to protect customers against price hikes.

Importantly these policies that protect price hikes are not two-year contracts – that is that they are still renewable after a year giving you the flexibility to move if you wish. This is important as it means you are not tied in, and Policy Expert promise that if the price has gone down in the first year, they’ll search the market at renewal time and if there’s a better deal, they’ll give it to you.

Given the nature of Policy Expert’s brokerage service, customers are able to tailor their policies to their needs, so they avoid paying for features they don’t need – in many cases this means the home insurance is cheaper than the equivalent from direct insurers.

What do Policy Expert Insurance reviews from customers say?

According to more than 3,000 Policy Expert Home Insurance reviews on reviewcentre.com, the company scores 4.6/5 for both customer service and value for money, with 95.4% of customers saying they’d recommend the company to friends and family.

What do Policy Expert Insurance reviews from the experts say?

According to Defaqto, the independent reviewer of financial products, Policy Expert’s Home Plus policies and Primo insurance both score five out of five stars, making them "excellent products with a comprehensive range of features and benefits". The company’s Home Select and VFM cover policies both have three stars, making them "standard products providing an average level of features and benefits".

What is the process for making a home insurance claim with Policy Expert?

Although Policy Expert manages the claims process itself, it's important to note that the claim you submit will be reviewed by the underlying insurer who has underwritten your home insurance. So it will be their decision whether or not to pay the claim, rather than Policy Expert's. You can find more detail about the claims process in the "How to claim" section of the Policy Expert website.

"Easy and professional website, prices and options excellent. Thank you."
