MyPolicy has been operating since 1995 and offers both car and van insurance. It specialises in insurance for young drivers through their black box policy, also known as telematics, and also offer mileage-based insurance for those over the age of 25.

Overview of MyPolicy young driver car insurance cover

MyPolicy offers a telematics smart box policy for drivers aged 17-24. The company says you could save up to 65% on your premium on their black box policy. MyPolicy does not reveal how many customers receive this saving and from looking at its policy wording it appears discounts will only be included at renewal.

There are buttons on the site to 'calculate your savings' but clicking on takes you through to a form to get a quote.

Its policy has no curfew but driving the weekend and evenings will affect your score. The cost of the insurance is partly based on the miles you drive. However, if you think you are going to go over your allocated miles, you can purchase more.

The company also says that your black box will be fitted within ten days of your policy's start date, and you can pick the time and place. The cost of installation will be added to your premium. If you cancel your policy the black box may be deactivated but left in your car. There is a £50 fee to have it removed.

MyPolicy provides an online driving dashboard you can use to monitor how many miles you have driven and check how you've been driving.

The black box fitted by MyPolicy can track your car's location. This means if your car gets stolen, the company can help you find it.

MyPolicy offers rewards for safe drivers. If you stay under your allocated mileage and drive safely, MyPolicy may offer discounts on your renewal premium and on any additional hours you purchase.

MyPolicy also has a section on their website that offers information on how to drive safely and efficiently, including tips on driving at night and how to save fuel.

The company says it can cancel a policy because of poor driving. If you exceed a speed limit by 50%, for example, going 45mph in a 30mph zone, they can start the cancellation process.

How much does MyPolicy insurance cost?

The cost of car insurance from MyPolicy from MyPolicy will be influenced by a number of factors. The way they calculate your premium is based on your 'risk' - in other words, the probability you will need to make a claim. A key determiner of your risk will be the car you drive. Its make, model, age, security, value and size can all affect the price of your insurance.

For example, a more powerful car is seen as a higher risk.

On top of this, your age and driving experience will affect the price of your premium. Generally, younger, less experienced drivers will have higher premiums as they are statistically more likely to be involved in an accident.

That's why black box policies can be good for young drivers - though it does impose some limits on your driving, it can bring the price of your policy down. MyPolicy's insurance is partly based on how many miles you drive each year. If you have a lower mileage, you could save money.

Because so many factors influence the price of car insurance premiums, it is difficult to predict how much a quote from MyPolicy will be. Do not be tempted to put down incorrect information to get a lower insurance premium - if you do enter information incorrectly, you might not be able to claim if you need to.
