Overview of the cover provided by John Lewis Pet Insurance policies

John Lewis is a British institution. Founded in 1864, the department store is well-known and widely respected, and the retailer now offers financial services, including home, pet and car insurance.

The most distinctive feature of John Lewis's pet insurance policies is that all three of its levels of cover are "lifetime" policies. This means they continue to pay out even if a pet's medical condition lasts for a number of years (John Lewis calls this "long term cover"). By contrast, many cheaper, more basic pet insurance policies will only pay out for 12 months.

As a result, deciding between the three policies – Essential, Plus and Premier – mainly boils down to how much vet bills cover you want for your pet - £3,000 per year with Essential, £7,500 a year with Plus, or £12,000 a year with Premier.

If you're not sure how much cover is appropriate, your vet will be able to give you a view on what the likely costs of treatment for a pet like yours would be.

Other features of the policies include dental care, accidental damage cover, cover for death from accident or illness, third party public liability cover (for dogs only) and cover for complementary therapies. As you would expect, the amount of this cover is higher for the more expensive and highly-rated Plus and Premier policies.

John Lewis also offer a multi-pet discount of 5% if you are insuring more than one pet.

(The other pet insurance brands RSA underwrites include More Than, Argos, Homebase, Tesco, M&S, and the RSPCA). As a result, the underlying features of the product, along with the assessment of any pet insurance claims, and the customer service you receive, is likely to be similar to what you would get from other RSA-backed brands.

Does Buster the Boxer have John Lewis Pet Insurance?

Star of the 2016 John Lewis Christmas Advert, Buster the Boxer is already becoming an internet trampolining sensation. But is he insured?

Assuming Buster is 3 years old, neutered, and that his humans live in South London, the cost of John Lewis Pet Insurance for Buster would be as follows:

Essential: £49 per month

Classic: £69 per month

Premier: £81 per month

(It's worth noting that Boxers are one of the most expensive breeds to insure.)

If Buster had hurt himself on the trampoline, it's possible that RSA (John Lewis Pet Insurance's underwriters) might have contested the claim under the following clause in the policy wording: "You must also provide proper care and attention to your pet at all times and take all reasonable precautions to prevent accidents, injury or damage."

However, I'd like to think they would be charitable. After all, it is Christmas.
