Review: esure home insurance

David Woodfield By David Woodfield 2nd October 2015

In Summary

Esure is perhaps better known for its sub-brands, Sheila’s Wheels and Gocompare, but it does have a reputation for providing low-cost insurance such as home cover.

Esure’s home policy has been highly rated by both independent financial rating company Defaqto and consumer group, Which?, although customer reviews for esure have shown customer service to be below average.

You can also see our rankings of the best home insurance companies considering their customer feedback and industry ratings.

Or, compare prices for Esure home insurance using their very own Go Compare!

Background to esure home insurance

Esure was established in 2000 by Peter Wood, who also founded Direct Line. He wanted to offer the same direct-to-consumer value that Direct Line provides over the phone, but online instead.

The company behind esure launched another insurance brand, Sheila’s Wheels in 2005, but still trades directly under the esure insurance brand. It also owns the price comparison website, Go Compare.

Overview of the cover provided by esure home insurance policies

Esure offers combined buildings and contents insurance, with both elements also available separately. It has one standard level of cover for all customers, but optional extras are available.

For buildings insurance, customers can set the total level of cover required for damage, loss or destruction to your property. Esure’s policy includes up to £75,000 towards alternative accommodation, up to £1,000 cover for replacement locks and keys, and £2 million property owners’ liability cover as standard.

For contents insurance, again the total sum insured as flexible, although key policy benefits are up to £10,000 protection for office equipment in the home, up to £750 personal money cover, up to £2,000 garden contents cover, and gift cover around key seasons such as Christmas.

In addition to this, you can select further cover including:

  • Pest cover
  • Home emergency cover
  • Family legal protection
  • Annual travel insurance

How much does home insurance from esure cost?

Keeping premiums low is part of esure’s philosophy. In line with this, esure offers a number of incentives to attract new customers. For example, anyone taking out contents insurance who hasn’t claimed in the last 5 years will receive an immediate 40% discount.

The provider claims that more than half of its customers pay £146 or less for an annual policy when switching to esure, however the exact price you will pay depends on a number of influences.

For example, the age and location of your house will affect the premium price, as will the value of your contents – if you have any items of high value, you may need to insure these individually under the policy. In addition the number of optional extras you select will push the price upwards.

What do esure home insurance customers say?
