What types of travel insurance does Direct Line offer?
Direct Line offers three different types of travel insurance cover: single trip, annual multi-trip and Discoverer (its backpacker cover).
The cover levels for the annual multi-trip and single trip policies are:
- Medical and emergency cover of up to £10m, including £500 dental cover
- Personal money cover of up to £500, with a £250 per person limit
- Cancellation cover of £5,000. This is limited to £3,000 on the Discoverer policy
- Personal accident up to £25,000
- Personal liability up to £2m
- Legal assistance cover up to £25,000
Direct Line also offers a number of optional extras, including baggage cover of up to £1,500 (limited to £1,000 on the Discoverer policy) and winter sports cover.
Bear in mind that the baggage cover extra has a single limit of £300, with a £100 limit for consumables such as cigarettes or skin care products.
Are there any restrictions with Direct Line travel insurance?
There are some general exclusions to Direct Line's travel insurance cover that are common across most travel insurance policies. For instance, it will not pay any claim resulting from war, revolution or terrorism.
There are some travel insurance policies that will cover you for this, however. Check out our article on travel insurance with terrorism cover and for dangerous areas for more information.
The company also won't accept any claim as a result of you taking part in any activities that are not listed in its policy documents.
Does Direct Line offer travel insurance for over 65s?
Direct Line's multi-trip travel insurance is available for those aged 74 and under.
Its backpacker (Discoverer) travel insurance product requires you to be under the age of 55.
And if you are over the age of 60, you will only be insured up to 42 days of travel on a single trip policy (as opposed to 90 days if you are under the age of 60).
Does Direct Line offer travel insurance cover for pre-existing conditions?
Direct Line has a standard vetting procedure for pre-existing medical conditions. It defines a pre-existing medical condition as anything you have suffered from, had advice or treatment for, or are on the waiting list for, in the last 12 months leading up to the start of the insurance date.
This includes cancer, heart conditions, circulatory conditions, breathing conditions, gastro-intestinal or digestive conditions, bone or joint conditions or any terminal prognosis.
You must declare these before you take out the policy. Direct Line will then decide whether it chooses to cover you for that condition.
It can be extremely difficult to find cover for things like cancer. Most insurers will not cover you at all if you are a cancer patient. We don't think that's fair, which is why we're building a travel insurance product specifically for people with cancer. Join our travel insurance for cancer patients group to keep up to date.
How much does travel insurance from Direct Line cost?
Due to the range of factors that go into calculating a travel insurance premium, it can be difficult to predict how much your insurance will cost. These factors include your destination, your age, how long you are going away for, the policy you choose including any additional extras, and whether you have been given cover for any pre-existing medical conditions.
Usually, it's easier to simply get a quote from the company.
While cost is an important factor for many people, it shouldn't be the only thing you take into account when purchasing your travel insurance policy. You should also make sure you are covered for everything you need to be covered for. We've talked more about this in our best travel insurance article.
Excesses on the single trip and Discoverer travel insurance policies is £75, and on the annual multi-trip policy is £50.
Are any discounts available for Direct Line travel insurance?
When you buy online from Direct Line, you can get 25% off annual multi-trip travel insurance cover.
