Direct Line offers home insurance policies by telephone and online, but not through price comparison websites. Awarded five stars by industry body Defaqto, the highest possible rating, there are three levels of cover available – including a specialist policy for homes containing high-value items.
New customers who select a buildings and contents policy with no extras can save 35% when buying online, although minimum premiums apply.
Direct Line's home cover is underwritten by U K Insurance Limited.
Background to Direct Line home insurance
Direct Line started out in 1985 as a telephone order only insurance service. Today, it has 5 call centres responsible for handling the queries of 10 million customers.
It also now offers online insurance quotations, however, unlike some other insurance providers, Direct Line does not operate through price comparison websites. By cutting out these middlemen, the provider aims to save customers money on their policies.
Overview of the cover provided by Direct Line home insurance policies
There are 3 levels of cover available to Direct Line customers: home insurance, home insurance plus and SELECT premier.
Direct Line’s standard home insurance policy covers building insurance up to £1 million and contents to the value of £50,000, with a 24-hour emergency helpline available in the event of a claim.
For greater coverage, Direct Line’s home insurance plus premium includes many features that are optional extras within its home insurance cover as standard. Home emergency cover up to £500, family legal protection and accidental damage cover are among the added benefits.
SELECT premier is a specialist insurance premium designed for higher value homes, with the flexibility to cover single items such as antiques, fine art and jewellery under a single policy.

How much does home insurance from Direct Line cost?
As with all insurance policies, there is no set cost for Direct Line home cover. Your premium will depend on a number of factors, such as the level of cover you require, any previous claims, the value of the goods you want to insure and the age and location of your home.
To reduce costs, Direct Line offers a number of discounts, including 10% off if you buy more than one of its insurance products, and up to 35% reduction when you take out a home insurance policy online.
