Review: Direct Line Home Insurance

Sam Gilbert By Sam Gilbert

Key policy features

  • Unlimited buildings cover and £100,000 contents insurance with the Home Insurance Plus policy
  • An emergency hotel organised within one hour of you calling the company if your house is left uninhabitable after a fire
  • New combined buildings and contents customers can save 35% online

In summary

Direct Line offers home insurance over the phone and online, but the company does not believe in listing its policies on price comparison websites so the only way to get a quote is directly from Direct Line.

It feels that by cutting out these middlemen it can save customers money on its policies.

New customers who select a buildings and contents policy with no extras can save 35% when buying online, although minimum premiums apply.

Direct Line's home cover is underwritten by U K Insurance Limited.

Direct Line started in 1985 as a telephone-only insurance service but now has an online quote form.

Overview of the cover provided by Direct Line home insurance policies

There are three levels Direct Line home cover: Home Insurance, Home Insurance Plus and Select Premier.

Direct Line’s standard Home Insurance policy covers building insurance up to £1m and contents up to the value of £50,000, with a 24-hour emergency helpline available in the event of a claim.

For greater coverage, Direct Line’s Home Insurance Plus policy includes unlimited buildings cover, up to £100,000 for contents and many features that are optional extras within its home insurance cover as standard. It offers up to £500 a callout for its home emergency cover, which can be useful if essential parts of your home such as your heating or electrics fail. Direct Line will pay for an engineer to fix the problem if it is under the £500 limit.

Accidental damage cover is also covered as standard under Plus.

Select Premier is a specialist insurance premium designed for higher value homes, with the flexibility to cover single items such as antiques, fine art and jewellery under a single policy.

Direct Line also says it will organise an emergency hotel within one hour of you calling them if your home is left uninhabitable after a fire. The company says that extreme weather conditions could increase the response time, and that the Highlands and any Islands are excluded.
