Direct Line has been in the insurance business for more than 35 years. It launched in 1985 in Bromley as the UK’s first direct car insurance company. Since then, its services have expanded dramatically to include van, home, travel and pet insurance.
Direct Line takes a strong stance of not appearing on comparison websites. It claims to offer its customers better quotes by passing on the savings they would typically spend on commissions to comparison companies.
Overview of the cover provided by the Direct Line Car Insurance policy
Direct Line offers a range of insurance options, but car insurance is its flagship product. It often offers deals and discounts on its website, such as special rates on multi-car insurance. Direct Line's multi-car insurance offers an introductory discount if you have more than one car to insure at the same address. Each car is insured individually rather than combined under one policy. It offers two types of cover:
Third-Party, Fire & Theft — Provides third-party liability cover and protects you if your vehicle is damaged in a fire or stolen. You get access to a 24/7 emergency helpline, as well as a guarantee on repairs for five years if you use an approved mechanic. It includes in-car equipment like stereo systems.
Comprehensive — Comprehensive cover offers all of the above, including the helpline, five-year repair guarantee and in-car equipment covers. It also covers the cost of repairs to your vehicle for damage caused in an accident. If you've been involved in a crash and can't drive your car because of it, you'll get a taxi so you can complete your journey. (Taxi booked to one destination within the UK. Direct Line's comprehensive cover includes:
Replacement of child car seats — Get a new car seat of a similar standard if yours is damaged. You may be required to provide proof of purchase if you claim.
Hotel expenses — Get up to £150 for the driver (or £250 for your whole party) towards hotel costs if you’re left stranded after an accident.
Vandalism promise — You won’t lose your No-Claims Discount if you claim for damage that’s a result of vandalism.
Personal possessions cover — Pays for the loss of, or damage to, clothing and belongings caused by fire, theft or accident while they're in your car.
Windscreen cover — Covers the cost of repairing or replacing your windscreen.

Direct Line also has an ‘uninsured driver promise’. The uninsured driver promise means you won’t lose your No Claims Discount if you have an accident that wasn’t your fault with an uninsured driver. Better still, Direct Line will cover your excess. You will need to provide Direct Line with the uninsured driver's registration number and the make and model of their car.
When you take out a Direct Line car insurance policy , you can choose to add some extra features to your cover. You can protect your No Claims Discount, purchase motor legal protection and add breakdown cover to your policy.
Direct Line Guaranteed hire car cover comes as standard with Direct Line’s comprehensive policy (Underwritten by UK Insurance Limited). You’ll get a guaranteed hire car while repairs are carried out at an approved mechanic. Alternatively, you’ll get one for 21 days in a row if you choose a repairer not pre-approved by Direct Line. Guaranteed car hire excludes windscreen claims and customer-delayed claims. You can get a guaranteed hire car upgrade when you purchase your policy to receive a car similar to yours if needed.
Although it’s not an optional feature, Direct Line also offers a telematics policy (also known as black box insurance) that may be useful for young drivers. What do customers say about Direct Line car insurance?
Direct Line uses the review site Reevoo to collect customer feedback. Revoo states that 99% of over 1,000 respondents would buy again from Direct Line (April 2021). Bear in mind that these reviews aren’t exclusively for Direct Line's car insurance.
Direct Line fares better on some of the bigger review sites. In April 2021, it was rated 4.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot, with 65% of respondents describing their experience as ‘Excellent’. Customers typically praise the ease of the claims process. Direct Line responds quickly to most negative feedback left of the review site.
What do expert reviews say about Direct Line?
Direct Line made our list of the best UK car insurers in 2021. We included it in our list because of the high level of cover available in its policies and its reputation for excellent customer service.
Autoexpress.co.uk’s most recent car insurance survey was in 2019. Out of 25 insurers, it placed Direct Line in the top half of the list, ranking in 10th place. Direct Line also scored well in Fairer Finance’s customer experience ranking, updated in Spring 2021.
