Review: Argos Pet Insurance

Ronny Lavie By Ronny Lavie 5th October 2015

In Summary

While many people will associate Argos with household goods, they have in fact been an insurance provider for over ten years. In partnership with RSA, one of the world's biggest and best-known insurance companies, they offer a range of dog insurance and cat insurance policies.

Overview of the cover provided by Argos Pet Insurance policies

Argos offer 3 insurance policies: SILVER, GOLD, and PLATINUM.

SILVER and GOLD are similar in many respects. They are both time-limited policies, with a limit of 12 months. So for example, if your pet develops a long-term condition, you would only be able to claim against the veterinary bills for the first 12 months. Total vet cover is £2,500 for SILVER and £4,000 for GOLD. Otherwise SILVER and GOLD offer all the same features (with the exception of cover for accidental damage, which is limited to GOLD), providing a broad range of cover for most eventualities; the difference, again, is the maximum amount associated with those claims.

Argos PLATINUM is a lifetime policy, meaning that there is no time-limit on claims. There is a higher maximum amount (than with silver or gold) associated with most aspects of the policy. For example, Vet’s bills are covered up to £7,000.

How much does pet insurance from Argos cost?

With almost all pet insurance companies, the cost of pet insurance varies widely depending factors like the age and breed of your pet, and which part of the UK you live in. But to give you an indication, Which? obtained the following quotes for Argos Platinum as part of their review:

  • 5 year old mixed breed dog: £375 per year
  • 5 year old Labrador Retriever: £563 per year
  • 6 year old mixed breed cat (moggy): £168 per year

In the 2013 review by Which?, Argos Platinum was one of the cheapest lifetime pet insurance policies. With policies ranked from most-expensive to least-expensive, Argos Platinum was placed 12th (out of 15) for dog insurance and 13th (also out of 15) for cat insurance.

Argos Rabbit Insurance

Argos doesn't offer insurance for pet rabbits - to see the insurance companies who do insure rabbits, check out our Rabbit Insurance Comparison.

What We Say

Argos pet insurance is one of a number of brands underwritten by RSA, one of the world's largest insurance companies. (The other pet insurance brands RSA underwrites include John Lewis Insurance, MORE TH>N, Homebase Pet Insurance, Tesco, M&S, and the RSPCA). As a result, the underlying features of the product, along with the assessment of any pet insurance claims, and the customer service you receive, is likely to be similar to what you would get from other RSA-backed brands.

Argos Pet Insurance Customers Reviews

Independent review site Fairer Finance gave Argos a consumer experience score of 61% in spring 2018, ranking it 2nd out of 22 companies. It also awarded it a gold ribbon.
