Review: AA Breakdown Cover

The AA launched over a century ago, in 1905. It has since grown to be one of the UK’s leading recovery service and it operates a variety of insurance products, including travel, home and car insurance.

At present new customers buying AA breakdown cover with National Recovery can add Home Start for free. Unfortunately, the offer is not open to cashback customers and after the first year the AA will start charging you for Onward Travel unless you cancel it.

Overview of the cover provided by AA breakdown cover

The AA offers a variety of cover combinations to suit all circumstances. You can choose cover for yourself (as a driver and passenger), cover for two people at the same address (as drivers and passengers), family cover and cover for a specific vehicle of any age.

The AA’s Basic Breakdown Cover includes up to 2 callouts a year, 24/7 roadside assistance for breakdowns more than quarter of a mile from home and recovery to a nearby garage if the vehicle cannot be fixed at the roadside.

This basic policy can be customised and upgraded, by adding National Recovery (transport to a UK destination if your vehicle cannot be fixed at the roadside), Home Cover (for breakdowns on your driveway or within quarter of a mile of home), Onwards Travel (car hire, public transport or a hotel room if your vehicle cannot be fixed at the roadside) and Parts and Garage Cover (up to 5 claims of £500 each in a year. A £35 excess applies).

Customers who purchase National Recovery and opt to pay annually receive Home Cover for free.

Annual and Single Trip European cover is also available, which gives you access to over 40,000 trusted garages throughout the EU. You can get cover for one-way trips (if you are flying back) and long stays (up to 350 days).

How much does AA breakdown cover cost?

At the time of writing, the AA’s basic Breakdown Cover with one callout costs £32 on a roadside vehicle - Breakdown Membership starts from £39.

Cover including National Recovery, Free Home Start and Roadside starts at £99. If you opt for Roadside, National Recovery, Onward Travel with Free Home Start you are looking at £119.

On Reviewcentre.com it received an average score of 2 out of 5 stars from over 690 reviews and 26% said they would recommend it.

What do AA Breakdown Insurance reviews from the experts say?

Defaqto – the independent reviewer of financial products – gave the AA 5 out of 5 stars for both its full UK and European level of cover, making it "an excellent product with a comprehensive range of features and benefits".

Meanwhile, consumer review site Which? awarded AA’s breakdown cover a score of 84% and listed the company as one of its recommended providers.
