Job summary

We are looking for an Engineering Manager with a strong technical background to help the broader product organisation execute our ambitious growth goals. This role will be a pivotal part of our continued success and will be a crucial enabler for our growth in the UK, Sweden, the US and beyond.

As a Global Platform Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for the growth and development of our platform engineers and leads as well as the overall performance and technical direction of one or more global platform squads.

As an Engineering Manager you are coaching and developing our future technical leaders – helping individuals and teams make high quality decisions independently and autonomously.

You are a coder, a techie and an engineer at heart and you have moved into management because you see the leverage it provides and you love working with people as well as tech.

Your key responsibilities

  • Supporting, coaching and developing high performing engineers through regular 1:1s, continuous feedback and relationships with team leads.
  • Supporting, coaching and developing interdisciplinary product squads, working with product managers and senior technical leaders to ensure teams are high-performing and consistently and iteratively delivers high-impact, high-quality work.
  • Contributing to management best practices: helping us become an exceptional place to work for the ambitious, highly motivated people that we hire
  • Partnering with senior engineers to drive technical initiatives that improve our engineering practices.
  • Provide technical direction and guidance to the product squads you manage, ensuring that they are delivering to, and contributing to, our global platform architecture.
  • Working with our Head of Engineering and our People Team to devise and implement robust resource plans (including significant personal involvement in assessment and selection) to meet business delivery needs and ensure a durable and well-balanced skills profile across the team.

How you’re measured

  • The speed and stability of the changes introduced by the squads you are responsible for.
  • Employee Net Promoter Scores (eNPS) of the developers under your care.
  • Regular structure 360 feedback from your teams and the wider organization you will be working with on a regular basis.

What you bring

Knowledge

  • You have previously worked as a software engineer at a senior level, and you still like write some code whenever you get the chance.
  • You have already made the transition from engineer to manager and you'll have experience mentoring the performance and development of high-performing engineers.
  • You have an empathetic leadership style, and you build strong, effective relationships. You care deeply about helping others achieve their goals, avoid burnout, and become the best engineers they can be. You respect, enable and empower teams to make decisions autonomously.
  • You know what good looks like for a high-performing team of engineers and know how to get there. You have direct experience with influencing, coaching and developing teams that are autonomous, self-organized, and self-directed.
  • You have deep knowledge of Agile software delivery and API development and support.
  • You have knowledge of recent developments in tech industries that could be relevant to our growing and developing technology team. You can contribute effectively and knowledgably to technical debates with your squads and across the engineering team.
  • You have a strong focus on outcomes and the tangible impact of improvements in the quality and efficiency of processes and systems.

  • Highly proactive, persuasive and communicative leader, who can successfully communicate objectives and manage expectations. Strong written, verbal, presentation and interpersonal skills. 
  • Coaching leadership - knowing how to inspire exceptional effort with individuals and teams through engagement and empowerment in order to achieve results.
    Open communicator ensuring healthy and respectful debate of the issues to ensure better decision making.
  • Confident - able to take heat and/or professionally push back on expectations when appropriate.
  • Commercially astute and can recognise the meaning of “value” to Bought By Many and our customers to grow the business.
  • Analytical: lets data lead decision making.
  • Accountable and has integrity: will make, own and meet internal and external commitments and earns the respect of peers, staff and clients.
  • Enjoys working in a fast-paced, fluid environment and juggling multiple pieces of work simultaneously. Solution-oriented and able to think and move quickly to resolve issues.
  • Has tolerance for a start-up environment where a pragmatic, and sometimes ‘scrappy’, approach is required, rather than a perfectionist approach.

Experience and qualifications

  • Very recent experience managing a large and diverse team of engineers.
  • Hands on experience as an engineer.
  • Ideally a computer science degree or equivalent.
